Numeracy Related Activities and difficulties with Stamina
Remember, disability is a highly individualised experience. People with the same disability may have very different capabilities and/or needs, so it is always best to discuss any adaptations to practice, the environment or equipment directly with the disabled person themselves rather than making assumptions about what adjustments may be suitable.
Stamina is the capability of sustaining prolonged stressful effort. Some medical conditions and certain disabilities can have a significant impact on someone’s stamina, including their ability to concentrate; these include, for example, heart conditions, asthma and Multiple Sclerosis. In addition, some people with mobility difficulties may need to exert a great deal of energy to get around, whilst others, who have mental health difficulties, may be substantially affected by the medication they need to take.
Difficulties associated with stamina are unlikely to have a particular effect on numeracy related activities unless the course requires a substantial amount of reading. If this is the case, the teacher should ensure that sufficient time is allotted to the task and also encourage rest breaks to rest the eyes and also assist concentration.
