Group Work Activities and Difficulties with Mobility

Remember, disability is a highly individualised experience. People with the same disability may have very different capabilities and/or needs, so it is always best to discuss any adaptations to practice, the environment or equipment directly with the disabled person themselves rather than making assumptions about what adjustments may be suitable.

Group work is a form of cooperative learning which aims to develop students knowledge, generic skills, (e.g. communication skills, collaborative skills, critical thinking skills) and attitudes. The ability to participate effectively in group work or team work is seen as a desirable employability skill and should be considered part of every learner’s educational experience.

Students may meet for their group work in the library, café, even in each other’s homes. For those who use wheelchairs or who cannot climb stairs, the choice of an accessible venue is critical to their involvement.

Where students meet as a group and work at tables, the height of the tables is an important consideration as many wheelchairs will not fit under a table of conventional height. This is an issue that can be easily resolved by using stable ‘risers’ under each table leg to give increased height.

Timing of group meetings can be another important factor for those with mobility difficulties engaging in group work. People who need to use walking aids or crutches will not be able to carry anything in their hands and they will need more time to get from place to place. The other people in their group need to be aware of these needs and accommodate them willingly.
